History
“The more you know about the past the better prepared you are for the future.” Theodore Roosevelt
At Les Landes, our History curriculum aims to ignite curiosity, deepen understanding and help children make sense of the world around them. We want every child to see themselves as a historian – asking and answering thoughtful questions, analysing sources, and exploring how the past shapes the present and influences the future.
Our curriculum is rich, broad and balanced, in line with the Jersey Curriculum, and places a strong emphasis on local history. By exploring Jersey’s unique heritage and its connections to Britain and the wider world, we aim to instil in our pupils a sense of identity, belonging and pride in where they come from.
Through meaningful learning experiences, including educational visits in the local community and the use of a wide range of historical sources, pupils develop key skills such as chronological understanding, critical thinking and interpretation. We encourage children to consider different perspectives, challenge assumptions, and recognise that history is complex and shaped by a range of voices and experiences.
We make strong cross-curricular links with English, using high-quality texts to enrich historical understanding and build vocabulary. Through reading and writing in context, children develop empathy, narrative understanding and a deeper connection to the people and events they study.
Ultimately, we aim to nurture a life-long interest in history and equip our pupils with the tools to think critically, question respectfully and understand the world around them now and in the future.
