‘The Y4 class at Les Landes School has made a significant contribution to the school community and beyond, through their demonstrated commitment to inclusion. In order to better communicate with a child in their class who has complex needs, they have learnt Makaton and shared their learning with the whole school. In addition, they have learnt British Sign Language alongside their parents, so that the deaf parents of another one of their peers are more fully included in school life. This led to evening classes being run by the child and his mother, with support from a Teacher of the Deaf. The group of children and parents performed a signing carol at the Christmas Carol Service and this year our Signing Choir won an award at the Eisteddfod.  The children now sign during singing assemblies. The class was celebrated on ITV Channel News during Deaf Awareness Week, as an example of community inclusion.    The Y4 children know, understand and use the phrase ‘All Different; All Equal’ and their work in this area is to be celebrated. Several children in this class have led whole school assemblies to help everyone understand difference in our school and celebrate diversity and inclusion. These have included conditions affecting their peers - epilepsy, cerebral palsy and GAND syndrome. The class is a beacon of excellent practice and their impact reaches beyond our playground gates.’
